recreation in the bristol bay region
The city of Dillingham is located at the confluence of the Nushagak and Wood Rivers. From this site the rivers flow into Nushagak Bay and Bristol Bay. This area is home to the world's largest sockeye (red) salmon fishery. If you like sport-fishing this is the place to be. The lakes and rivers contain some of the world's finest sport-fish: sockeye, coho, chinook and king salmon, rainbow trout, Arctic char, grayling and dolly varden, to name a few. You may choose from remote fly-in fishing and riverside camps to some of the finest fishing lodges in the state.
Hunting for moose, caribou and bear is a dream for some people.
The largest herd of caribou in the state, as well as large numbers of moose, brown and black bear and other game, makes Dillingham the start of the best in Alaska hunting adventures.
Our experienced local guides and outfitters can help make your fishing and hunting vacation dreams come true.
If eco-tourism is more to your taste, look no further. Pristine lakes for boating, hiking and flight-seeing are all available.
Keep an eye out for beluga whales that follow the salmon run and there is always the possibility of a rare sighting of orca whales.
